Valentine explores the butterflies and nervousness experienced with your first love. It is a sweet, heartfelt film that follows a protagonist who receives an anonymous letter from an unknown person with the words “Your smile is cute” and a duck illustration. The protagonist then tries to find the author of the letter, using the duck illustration as a major clue. One day, in class, she sees a boy drawing an identical duck from the letter on his paper. The boy is also, in fact, the person she secretly liked since the beginning of the film. The film follows the story and mystery of two people navigating to find love, and the duck serves as a continuous symbol throughout the film to signify love being present from the start. Paired with Laufey’s song Valentine and a grainy muted color palette, the film feels nostalgic and intimate.
